A 400 meter section of the Llangollen canal waterproofing system needed renovation due to leaks in the nearly 200-year-old structure. The constraint was to use a product that met the technical and environmental requirements. It was important that the canal did not become a sterile environment. The engineers therefore chose the Coletanche bituminous geomembrane. Another benefit is that it can be installed by local labour and does not require a specialist subcontractor, unlike other systems.
After removing silt (over 90 years of sedimentation!), a drainage layer was laid between two geotextiles and covered with a compacted top layer and COLETANCHE NTP 2.
Coletanche’s benefits for this project were:
- Robustness, resistance
- Doesn’t not require protection from UV radiation, mechanical installations or boats
